Dear _____, people across the United States, from all different backgrounds and beliefs, are speaking out against violence this election season. Join us by signing onto the above statement yourself at www.peacealliance.org/condemnviolence

An overwhelming number of Americans want a nonviolent response to the election results. This a fundamental tenet of democracy and has been a bedrock of our election process throughout our nation’s history. Yet in this election season there is an increasing concern of violence.

A recent poll found that 56% of voters said they expect to see “an increase in violence as a result of the election.” Additional polls show there is a growing number of people who believe that violence would be justified.

This is a troubling development that needs our immediate attention. We are asking leadership from all sectors of society, and all political persuasions, to come together to promote peace and denounce violence after the elections.

We need a groundswell of support behind this ideal to help make sure things progress nonviolently. A shared commitment is what we are asking of each other; to create a social container that can meaningfully impact our collective action. We can find other ways to navigate our differences, let’s agree that violence is not an option.
